Product Description:

The interchangeable single focal length lens Lumix G 14mm f/2.5 ASPH features a 14mm (35 mm camera equivalent: 28 mm) wide angle and F2.5 brightness with sharp, high contrast image rendering. Taking advantage of the wide angle of view and deep depth of field, the compact LUMIX G 14 mm / F2.5 ASPH offers excellent performance in shooting not only landscapes but also snapshot or indoor shooting. Comprising of six lenses in five groups including three aspherical lenses, the lens system achieves both high compactness with short overall length of 20.5mm and high optical performance. It also excels in shooting subjects with components of straight line including architectures thanks to the minimized distortion.

This is one of the better Panasonic lenses.

The integration of stepping motor and inner focus drive system realizes the use of silent, high speed contrast AF. Seven blades give the aperture a rounded shape that produces an attractively smooth effect in out-of-focus areas when shooting at larger aperture settings. Highly reliable metal mount assures durability for active use and uses multi-coated lens elements that minimize ghosts and flare to further enhance its shooting performance.

Reviews of Panasonic Lumix 14mm f/2.5 G Aspherical Lens for Micro Four Thirds Interchangeable Lens Cameras

Here are some reviews of Panasonic Lumix 14mm f/2.5 Aspherical Lens from Amazon.com:

When I first opened the box for this lens and pulled it out I couldn’t believe it. It is unbelievably small which is a big reason for me purchasing this lens. The front lens cap is thinner than the one on the 20/1.7 and the rear lens cap is also thinner making the whole package even smaller. After reading reviews stating that this lens is a compromise with heavy vignetting I wasn’t sure what to expect. Well, all I can say is that this lens is sharp. In the center of the frame it appears as sharp as my 20/1.7. On the edges maybe just a tad less sharp but not by much. As to vignetting, maybe a little but barely noticeable and only in some pictures of blank walls. It’s a non issue. I am very happy with the image quality and when I look at this lens on the front of my E-PL1 I just feel amazed at the small size. This lens, coupled with my Panasonic 20/1.7 and a Voigtlander 40/1.4, makes the most wonderful compact kit that I have ever owned and that is the main reason why I converted from my Nikon to the micro 4/3 system. Would I like it if this lens was faster? Sure I would but then it would be bigger. Personally I say bravo to Panasonic for this lens.

Another review from a satisfied user:

This lens probably deserves a “6″ for sharpness and portability. However, because the chromatic aberration, both blue-yellow and red-cyan, are very strong, I only gave this lens a “4″ overall. There’s a bit of distortion and vignetting as well.

All of the above aberrations are automatically corrected in JPEGs and you can correct them without too much difficulty in RAW images processed in Lightroom or CS5. Building an Adobe lens profile would be quite helpful in reducing RAW post-processing work load. My sense is that Panasonic wisely concentrated upon maximizing sharpness and contrast, letting go those aberrations that are now easily corrected by digital post-processing or in-camera.

I had some initial reservations about this lens because of some mixed reviews at various sites. However, the Imaging-Resource lens review showed exceptional sharpness and contrast and that’s really true. High sharpness and good image contrast are the two critical items that have to be built into the glass, and Panasonic did an excellent job here.

My 14/2.5 works very well on an Olympus E-PL1 and is an excellent wide-angle anchor for an mostly prime lens kit that includes Panasonic 20/1.7, Olympus 35/3.5 macro, and Olympus 50/2 macro. The latter two lenses require the MMF-2 adapter but all four prime lenses, camera, VF-2, and accessories are very light and portable, fitting into a very small, light camera bag while giving phenomenal sharpness.
